The court measures 18 meters on the long side × 9 meters on the short side, and each team's area is a 9-meter square square. The net height is 2.43 meters for the men and 2.24 meters for the women. Some men's players reach over 3.5 meters in maximum reach, and they spike from heights more than 1 meter above the net.
The match is played as a 5-set match. In the first set, the first to score 25 points wins, and the team that takes the 3 sets wins. If the score is tied at 24-24, the match continues until the gap is 2 points. Only the 5th set is a 15-point match.
About the position
They are divided into five types: Outside Hitter (OH), Middle Blocker (MB), Opposite (OP), Setter (S), and Libero (L). The frontcourt outside hitter and middle blocker basically place players in the same position opposite the backcourt. The setter forms a diagonal position with the opposite.
Opposite literally means "opposite." It is named because it is located diagonally (opposite) to the setter. They specialize in offense and do not serve receive; even when in the back, they always initiate back attacks. In contrast, the defensive player is called the libero. They wear a uniform of a different color, cannot serve or spike, and cannot toss with overhand passes in front of the attack line.
In volleyball, where three players are placed in the front and three in the back, the six players move clockwise once when they gain the right to serve. Players who move to the back cannot block, and spikes are limited to attacks from behind the attack line (back attacks), which adds variety to the game. Watching with rotation in mind makes the game more interesting.
Player substitutions are allowed up to six times per set.
A player who was playing as a starter may return to the court once during the same set after being substituted and then settling down to the bench. In this case, only the player who entered as a substitute with you can be substituted with you, and the number of substitutions counts as two times (once when leaving the bench and once when returning to the court). Note that substitutions with liberos do not count toward the number of player substitutions.
Each team can request a 30-second timeout up to two times per set.
This is a system that allows you to request a video review if you have objections to a referee's decision.
The items you can request for challenge are: (1) ball IN/OUT, (2) block touch, (3) antenna judgment, (4) server line fault, (5) touch net, (6) floor touch, (7) line fault on the attack line, and (8) last touch—a total of eight items.
You can request "until you fail twice per set."
